I went to see sleazy punk rockers Girls On Top on their home turf of Camden. - not that you'll find much turf round there, although grass appears to be in plentiful supply according to the many immigrants blatantly offering it on every street corner...

This gig was to launch the band's third album and they drew a respectable crowd as usual - 'respectable' meaning quantity rather quality. These sleazebags are hardly going to attract a classy clientelle.  With songs like 'Fuck Head', 'Barbie Is A Smackhead', and 'Head In The Oven' they are unlikely to be booked for many debutante's balls. Rock 'n' roll doesn't come much more sordid than this. The band's usual guitarist Neil Downe is still suffering from getting a sea urchin spine trapped in a finger earlier this year so was unable to play much tonight. His place was filled by the very lively Mel Roxy from Mikabomb - who has also been a stand-in bass player for Girls On Top in the past. Neil did manage to play the last few songs of the set, including the old trash/punk classic 'Strychnine' - a song I've never heard anyone else cover.
