21/12/2006 Honeykill @ the 12 Bar Club

I couldn't make Honeykill's previous gig at the 12 Bar Club, but I heard it was good so I've been looking forward to this one. I wasn't disappointed. The band made a special effort for their 'Christmas show' - sporting matching red tops and T-shirts.

At first sight it looked like the 'HQ' for Honeykill was emblazoned in shiny gold lettering across each garment, but closer inspection revealed it was 'HO' - so if you lined three band members up you'd get a seasonal 'Ho ho ho!'. Bassist Tish also had a shiny red Santa hat and 'Merry Tishmas' drawn on her arm!

The band launched into their set of rocking Foo Fighters and QOTSA inspired songs - maybe a bit of My Vitriol in there too?

They played well and the sound was surprisingly good considering the equipment and cramped confines of the venue. Honeykill finished their set with another seasonal touch - a rocking and anything but silent version of 'Silent Night - complete with mid-song time changes reminicent of the Wildhearts!

The band completed their contribution to the Christmas spirit by giving out free CDs afterwards - a special limited Christmas edition of their CD with their version of 'Silent Night' included.

Final band of the night was the ever entertaining Girls On Top. It was good to see guitarist Neil Downe playing a full set after needing a stand-in to help out at several gigs this year due to an injured finger. This band's brand of sleazy dirty punk and rock 'n' roll is good fun and well suited to 'intimate' West End venues such as this.
