27/6/2008 The Transmitters @ the Water Rats

Back to the venue with possibly the worst smelling toilets in London - yes, it's the Water Rats. As well as the pong from the bogs, I'm less than impressed with the beer at this pub these days - it used to serve good (if expensive) real ales - a rarity in London's live music venues. Right, that's the ranting out the way - now why am I here? Oh yes - music.

There have been more changes in the Transmitters camp: They have changed their name since I first saw them in the Dublin Castle two or three years ago - now they have changed their singer too.

The band's bubbly original singer Sarah left and has now been replaced by Gloria.

Both singers are good at fronting a band, but have quite different styles - each bringing something different.

What hasn't changed is the high energy level and the punk edged indie sound of the band.

The band get a warm reception from the crowd tonight, and are so fired up that they don't want to stop playing when they are told they have run out of time. They incur the displeasure of the venue staff when they decide to play another song - the lights are turned off and the stage is plunged into darkness! The band are not deterred and play on. The lights come back on and the Transmitters justify themselves by making this last number easily the most lively and powerful of their set - they really finish on a high note.
