26/5/2008 Dan Baird & The Quireboys @ the Borderline

....So, back at the Borderline for the second night running. Same 3 band bill - different running order. Stupidly I once again arrive when the excellent Diamond Dogs are playing their last song.

The Quireboys are on second tonight and again they are very good.

Spike is on good form again. He doesn't seem as pissed at shows these days - maybe he is taking the band more seriously and realises he has a loyal fanbase that he needs to hang onto.

The band are playing better than ever now - like a fine wine they have matured well with age.

Sulo from Diamond Dogs makes a guest appearance during the Quireboys set. He's not the only member of the band to appear on stage again later - I think I actually see more of Diamond Dogs during the other bands sets tonight than I did during their own set!

Yes, it's that Warner Hodges again! You just can't keep him off the stage at the Borderline - but why would you want to?

Once again, it's a great performance by the Quireboys.

Dan Baird & Homemade Sin finish things off in fine style. But Dan - it's normally the bass player's job to wear dodgy hats!

Once again, it's a storming set by Dan & the boys!

Dan  (on right below) was sporting what appeared to be a very well worn Telecaster, but is in fact a 1957 Fender Esquire that used to belong to the late Steve Marriot.

Last night I was hoping they might play the Georgia Satellites classic 'Battleship Chains', but they didn't. A friend informed me that Dan Baird never plays this song.  Well tonight he did! And we got 'Keep Your Hands To Yourself' again so this set was even better.

It was pretty hot and sweaty in this smallish venue - in fact it looked like even Dan's guitar was sweating buckets!

Towards the end of the set, the stage gets more and more crowded as both Quireboys guitars and Quireboys themselves end up on the the stage with Dan & Co.

It was a great show, and well worth going to see two night's running - it's not often you get a chance to see two bands this good on the same bill!
