24/11/2007 The Loyalties @ The Intrepid Fox

I couldn't make The Loyalties previous gig at the Intrepid Fox so I was glad to be able to get to this one. Unfortunately I missed their support band Radio Dead Ones, although I was told they were really good.

Having listened to The Loyalties previously I have to say they sound very much like the much missed Yo-Yo's - which isn't surprising as this band is virtually the last ill fated lineup of that band, but without the errant Danny McCormack. If you go and see this lot live that is pretty much what you get - in fact some of the actual songs even sound very much like Yo-Yo's songs. Seeing as Tom Spencer was one of the main singers and songwriters with that band as well as this one it's not that surprising. Tom has moved from guitar to bass with this band, and as they sounded so like Tom's earlier outfit we even had to check to see if he was playing a yellow Precision Bass!
This is basically the Yo-Yo's, but not quite as good - particularly not as good as the original lineup. That said - The Loyalties have some good tunes, and they are not in the business of cancelling gigs or splitting up in mid tour! If you like the Yo-Yo's, then the chances are you will like this band too - and they also threw in an unexpected surprise at the end of the set when they threw in that band's 'Stockholm Sick Blues'!

As it was a Saturday night and I was already virtually next door I decided on a visit to Decadence, seeing as I'd been meaning to go the previous couple of weeks and very nearly did. It was a bit of an anti-climax on this occasion with not so many of the 'usual suspects' in evidence, but at least I managed to avoid any drunken self destructive 'incidents' or other embarrassments...
PS: The Intrepid Fox closed in March 2014.
