A bit of a change of scene from my normal Camden haunts for this Wednesday night - Bar Vinyl in Inverness Street. It's the first night here by Turning Worm promotions who put on the free Sunday shows at the nearby World's End. Two bands, Ed Graham from the Darkness on DJ duties, and it's free to get in - you can't go wrong really. Well not unless the bands were terrible, which fortunately they aren't. First band is Novak Stare. They are a bit too indie for my taste, but seem quite good at what they do. The frontman is a fey Morrissey/Keane sounding bloke but a good singer. The guitarist is good too. They have one really good song called 'Transistor Sister' that stands out from all the others in their set and has 'hit single' written all over it. Last band are Bleech. This is the second time I've seen them - the first being when I saw them playing with Honeykill at The Enterprise recently. Bleech turn in a lively set of poppy tunes with a grunge influence. They seem to be starting to build a bit of a following - proof that getting out and working hard by playing lots of gigs still actually works, as opposed to taking the easy/lazy way out and relying on the internet to promote themselves as so many other bands are doing now - promoting yourselves to thousands of 'fans' all round the world who blow smoke up yer ass with comments on MySpace but don't actually come to your gigs. This band play with passion and rely on their music rather than their image - like a grungier version of JOANovARC or the Cut Outs - it will be interesting to see how they have progressed in a year's time. The night finishes with Ed Graham from The Darkness back on the decks playing a variety of mainly hard and heavy music including the likes of Buckcherry and Towers Of London (before they turned into a pop group). It's a good night out for free (although the bar selection & prices leave a bit to be desired) in an intimate venue. It's not a bad turnout for a mid-week gig by a couple of still unknown new bands either. |
These Blogs mainly deal with the countless gigs I go to, but there is some other stuff in there too - and the odd rant! I've just finished adding over 900 of my old posts from MySpace on here - everything is now on proper chronological order from 2005 to date - there is a LOT to read. Some of the older links may not work anymore - just click on the highlighted text for links to more info.
