Wednesday night finds me back at the Boston Arms Music Room - one of London's friendlier and cheaper club type venues - Newcastle Brown is still only £3.30! The rocking Ferocity Lights are the reason I'm here. This London band haven't been that active on the gig circuit recently but it's good to see them back. The music is very American sounding - think post-punk, Breeders, Husker Du, alt-rock - with loud guitar and shouty bits not a million miles away from the Foo Fighters either. The tunes (yes actual tunes) are catchy and bouncy - you can download their whole 'Window Seat To Hell' album legally and for FREE here - silly not to really.
Next things get a bit more punky - fairly generic modern pop/punk rather than the classic old school or cliched leather jackets and Mohican variety. MUG get off to a bit of a shakey start and don't sound like the best of bands, although they definitely improve as their set goes on and they get warmed up. Or maybe it's just the beer kicking in.
MUG are good at what they do, but don't really float my boat to be honest - although there are plenty of people here tonight who's boats are well and truely floated. Terrible look though - shit shorts overload! Guys - you live in England - it's not really hot enough to justify this type of attire of a September evening.
Much the same applies to the headliners Banner Pilot - the same sort of thing but from the USA instead of England. Mosh pit and crowd surfing ensue, although with only limed success as one or two unfortunates take a dive to the floor - crowd surfing doesn't work so well if the room isn't full enough...
Still, plenty of other people have a great time on a school night in Tufnell Park. It's been worth enduring the dreaded Northern Line for just for Ferocity Lights as far as I'm concerned. |
These Blogs mainly deal with the countless gigs I go to, but there is some other stuff in there too - and the odd rant! I've just finished adding over 900 of my old posts from MySpace on here - everything is now on proper chronological order from 2005 to date - there is a LOT to read. Some of the older links may not work anymore - just click on the highlighted text for links to more info.
