My first weekend of the New Year is starting to get rather busy! Not content with going to one gig last night, tonight I hope to get to at least two. However, I'm not well organised enough to get to Oxford Street by 7.15 to catch Healthy Junkies - I'll have to catch them another time... I do manage to get to the Purple Turtle in time to see the Dogbones. Nomi is sporting a blonde wig tonight and looking more 'Glam' than usual. The band are on good form, and their twin drummer powered punk/grunge assault is particularly powerful tonight. It's good to see this Queen Adreena offshoot playing in a bigger venue than usual and to a lot more people. They certainly rise to the occasion. When the Dogbones finish I leave Camden for the West End. After drooling over a few overpriced guitars in shop windows in Denmark Street, I soon find myself in the 12 Bar Club - probably the most rock 'n' roll music venue left in the area. I'm in time to catch a set of red hot rockabilly from Vince Ray & The Boneshakers. Tonight's show is a birthday tribute to Elvis - so who better to headline than Viva Las Vegas? I don't think I've ever seen three guitarists, plus a bass player and a singer crammed onto this tiny stage before! The band crank out a cracking set of Elvis covers - in their own punk 'n' roll style. You can't go wrong with these songs really - and there is a surprise thrown in at the end with a cover of the Ramones classic 'Blitzkrieg Bop'! An excellent night in the West End's most intimate music venue. For what is normally the quietest weekend of the year as people tend to stay in 'cos they are skint or still recovering from New Year, it's turned to to be a pretty rocking one! |
These Blogs mainly deal with the countless gigs I go to, but there is some other stuff in there too - and the odd rant! I've just finished adding over 900 of my old posts from MySpace on here - everything is now on proper chronological order from 2005 to date - there is a LOT to read. Some of the older links may not work anymore - just click on the highlighted text for links to more info.
