9/9/2010 New York Alcoholic Anxiety Attack @ The Dublin Castle

A bit of a change of scene tonight as I haven't been to Camden's Dublin Castle
for months. I'm there to see New York Alcoholic Anxiety Attack. Guess where
they are from? Yes, Bradford. Their influences obviously come from much
further afield though - both geographically and chronologically. They have a
good look as well as sounding different.

The songs on their MySpace page don't really give you much idea what the
band are like live. If you go to one of their gigs you'll find them to be much
more of an in-your-face ROCK animal than their quieter recorded work
suggests - less Stone Roses and more T-Rex/Stooges, with a bit of grunge
thrown into the mix. Oddly, while the guitarist has virtually no effects pedals
the bass player has more at his feet than most widdley-widdley guitar heroes!
This is largely wasted as I can't even hear him half the time, but when I can
hear him he sounds like a pretty good player. The band have a sort of
glam tinged hippy look to them, but they sound harder and more edgy than
they look - with a sort of laid back understated tension in their sound.
Certainly an interesting band and worth checking out again.

After arriving at the Dublin Castle later than I intended, I end up throwing the
pub's Weston's organic cider down my neck faster than normal to make up
for lost time - something I end up regretting in the morning as this 7.2%
strong brew causes me to oversleep by over an hour...  Oh well, it's Friday
by then and the weekend is in sight...
