Friday night and I'm heading from one side of London to the other - I'm off to Brixton to see the wonderful Cherry Brakewells at Music Bar. It's basically just a pub venue - formerly 'Southside'. No real or bottled ales, but the bar prices are pretty reasonable for a music venue at £2.50 a pint. It's an Oxjam charity event and the bill is very varied with dance acts and comedians as well as music. The MC usually does 'standup' and is good at getting people in the back room where the acts are appearing. First on is a hip-hop dance duo - not the sort of thing I'd usually watch, but their routine is well polished and entertaining. It's not really a great night for Cherry Brakewells - through no fault of their own. The sound isn't very good and they can't hear anything on stage. They have some new songs - one of which I thought was rather good. Unfortunately, their set of funked up rock was rather short because there were so many other acts on the bill - and the band cut it even shorter as the sound was so bad. Consequently, none of my favourite songs got played. There was a good crowd in the room though, and the band went down very well in the short time they were on stage. There didn't appear to be any other rock acts on the bill, so I didn't hang about for too long afterwards as it's a long way home from Brixton.... |
These Blogs mainly deal with the countless gigs I go to, but there is some other stuff in there too - and the odd rant! I've just finished adding over 900 of my old posts from MySpace on here - everything is now on proper chronological order from 2005 to date - there is a LOT to read. Some of the older links may not work anymore - just click on the highlighted text for links to more info.
