26/9/2010 Lilygun @ The Underworld

Sunday night and I find myself at the Underworld - a venue I find myself liking
less and less as time goes on, but at least the toilets don't stink like they did
last time I was here.

I'm only there to see Lilygun, but I arrive early enough to catch
The Mariana Hollow - who's name the promoters have managed to miss-spell
on the tickets.  I don't really know anything about this female fronted
Goth/metal band, but seem to remember hearing them on the radio some time
in the past and thinking they sounded worth checking out.

Their singer certainly has a good voice as well as amazingly long black hair
which looks terrific. The band are obviously excellent musicians and the
lead guitarist gets a nice tone out of his Parker axe, but none of their
songs really grab me.

Lilygun are an intriguing band led by the enigmatic Anna-Christina.

Last night I was hoping to see Robin Guy playing drums with Bermondsey
Joyriders but he wasn't available so someone else depped. By coincidence
he also plays with Lilygun, but tonight the drum stool was occupied by the
band's other drummer Belle - who will be familiar to Decadence regulars
for his DJ slots as well as drumming for Killing Miranda. However, even
without Robin Guy we still get to see a member of Rachel Stamp in the band
as tonight David Ryder Prangley is 'Special Guest' on bass.

Lilygun shows don't seem to happen very often, so there seem to be quite a
few people here to see this one. They are rewarded with a dark and
atmospheric performance. This alt/rock band's influences vary from Goth to
grunge, with a little Glam thrown into the mix. The songs in the set veer
between dark and brooding and uplifting, while Anna-Christina's feline stage
presence is captivating.

She draws you into her dark world, but she also shows you the light at the end of the tunnel. After the show is finished you are left wanting more and wondering how long you will have to wait until the next show...
