Thursday night finds a load of us in Camden for the Warrior Soul show at the Purple Turtle. However, the first port of call is the pub over the road to help a friend celebrate his birthday. I arrive to find I seem to know nearly everyone in the pub! We all stay in there until nearly ten o'clock as none of the support bands are to our liking - also enabling quantities of real ale to be downed before heading over to the Purple Turtle's more expensive and ale deficient bar. The venue has managed to run out of Newcastle Brown - didn't they know we were coming? Next best thing would appear to be the John Smiths they have on tap - but they've run out of that as well. The Purple Turtle is pretty full and the crowd are well up for it. Warrior Soul certainly deliver the goods tonight. The sound mix isn't too great, but the band turn in a good performance, and Warrior Soul's larger-than-life frontman Kory Clarke is always value for money! The set is pretty full-on and 'in your face' - featuring some newer songs as well as old favourites like 'Wastland', 'Fuck The Pigs', and 'Punk And Disorderly'. No ballads or acoustic bollocks here! It's a highly charged rock 'n' roll show, and Kory is a great frontman with a full throated roar of a voice. Apart from issues with the badly stocked bar, the Purple Turtle is an excellent venue for this band and I enjoy visiting this place FAR more than the likes of The Garage or any of the corporate Academy venues - I never feel I'm being ripped off at the Turtle. Afterwards the birthday celebrations continue in a different nearby pub as the Hope & Anchor over the road shuts early. I discover they serve Weston's Old Rosie - I shall have to remember this! As I have to be up at six in the morning I bale soon after midnight and manage not to miss the last train for a change. A most excellent evening out! |
These Blogs mainly deal with the countless gigs I go to, but there is some other stuff in there too - and the odd rant! I've just finished adding over 900 of my old posts from MySpace on here - everything is now on proper chronological order from 2005 to date - there is a LOT to read. Some of the older links may not work anymore - just click on the highlighted text for links to more info.
