2/10/2010 Shush @ The Underworld

I find myself back at the Underworld again for the second time in a week - this
time to see Shush.

This show is their album launch party - there are quite a few familiar faces
in attendance.

This band have always been very good live, and are now even better with
their increased armoury of tuneful pop/rock songs. Influences range from
the Wildhearts, to Eureka Machines, and maybe a bit of Honeycrack too?

Their previous release of a self titled EP was a very strong debut effort with a
polished and very professional production on top of some catchy tunes - now
they have taken things a step further.

The album is called 'Soundtrack Of My Life' and has a very strong opening
track in 'Do What I Want' with it's girl-power lyrics and heavy Wildhearts
style riffing. The 'attitude' doesn't stop there as the album also includes
sing-along live favourite 'F**k You'. Yes kids, swearing isn't big or
clever - but sometimes it's fun! Argentinian singer/guitarist Milena may have
a well deserved reputation for swearing like a trooper, but she also has the
voice of an angel - and she deploys it to good effect.

This band is a fearsome live animal that doesn't just hit you with catchy pop hooks - they ROCK pretty hard too.

All too soon the show is over, although as Shush are headining we get a longer set than usual. And then almost as soon as the band get out of the dressing room to see how things are going on the merch stall the venue's charmless security are throwing everyone out - which doesn't exactly help the band sell a lot of CDs at their 'Album Launch Show'.  I don't think the Underworld is a good venue to play if you are a band hoping to make some petrol/food money selling your merch after a show.  It's not a good venue if you're a punter wanting a few beers at the bar either - you are better off using the passout system the smoking ban has made necessary to nip out between bands and get much cheaper pint at the pub upstairs or elsewhere.
