So, after support from the excellent Trash Monroe and Kitty Lipps (the less said about the latter the better) it's onto tonight's headliners at The Underworld. Drugdealer*Cheerleader split up around two years ago after spending a good few years touring the toilet circuit and releasing several singles and an album. They had built up a bit of a following, but eventually decided they had taken things as far as they could go. Now they have reformed and are back just for one final tour. It's ironic that after several years of the band having a revolving door for bass players they have finally recruited Bomber - he fits in well and seems a solid and natural part of the band. Naturally, there is a cheerleader on stage for part of the band's set - no DDCL set is complete without at least one! There is quite a good turnout in Camden on this Thursday night and the atmosphere is good. The crowd are well up for it and determined to have a good time at one last Drugdealer*Cheerleader show. The band play pretty much all the singles and the whole of their album and a good time is had by all - this band was always about having fun. The band are certainly going out on a high point - which is definitely the best way to do it. The band's catchy brand of guitar based pop/rock was always less than 'politically correct' (as rock 'n' roll should be) and because of that and the name they chose for the band they were never going to 'make it'. I guess they always knew that and stuck to their guns making music on their own terms. That is always something to be proud of. Having a song about MySpace might have been cool two or three years ago, but although it had something to say at the time it now seems totally irrelevant. I suspect if you wrote a song about Facebook or Twitter now it would seem just as dated in five years time... A second album was supposed to be in the pipeline, but I guess now that will never see the light of day - a shame as their debut album had some good tunes and sounded well produced and varied. The Underworld is well attended and the band's fans give Drugdealer*Cheerleader an enthusiastic sendoff - and the band seem to be loving every minute of it! And so we say goodbye to a great party band, but they also understand that the art of partygoing is knowing when it's the right time to leave... |
These Blogs mainly deal with the countless gigs I go to, but there is some other stuff in there too - and the odd rant! I've just finished adding over 900 of my old posts from MySpace on here - everything is now on proper chronological order from 2005 to date - there is a LOT to read. Some of the older links may not work anymore - just click on the highlighted text for links to more info.
