After Friday night at the less than enjoyable St Moritz club, Saturday see's me heading down Holloway Road to Nambucca for an evening of glam and sleaze. This turns out to be far more enjoyable - simply because the venue is so much better. And they now serve real ale. And the beer is a lot cheaper. Tonight's show is basically the old 'Hotter Than Hell' club, bands, and clientelle transported from Camden to nearly Holloway Road. The place is pretty full - many of the same old faces, and the atmosphere is good. And you don't have to queue up for a piss - unlike the St Moritz! Only £6 on the door for around five bands so it's excellent value for money too. Max should move his club here! Unfortunately I don't arrive in time to see Starscream who were on first. I do manage to finally see the new lineup of Bubblegum Screw though. One drawback to this venue is the smoke machine - a massive hinderance to any attempts at photography as you keep having to wait for the air to clear. Although in the picture below it looks like bassist Zuri has just let go a massive fart! I haven't managed to see this lot for ages now, and half the band has changed since I last saw them. I think maybe they sound less like the New York Dolls these days, but they are still very much a rock 'n' roll band. Frontman Mark still has all the Johansen/Jagger moves and puts them to good effect. Another band on this scene featuring new members is King Lizard (OK - drummer Sky actually left a year or so ago) and this is the band's first gig with their new bass player as Alice is no longer in the band. Unfortunately after one smoke filled picture my camera batteries expired so that's yer lot! Flash and Niro throw themselves wholeheartedly into things as usual, and they seem to get to play to a bigger crowd than usual tonight. The Intrepid Fox must be nearly empty tonight as nearly all the regulars seem to be here instead - including the landlord! I imagine Decadence must be having a quiet night as well as most that club's regulars also seem to be here! Generation Graveyard play before the headliners, but having taken full advantage of the reasonably priced real ale on tap (London Pride for those interested) I can't remember much about them. Headline band are infamous Camden sleazsters Nothin' To Lose, but after last night's two hours plus of misery trying to get home from Soho in the small hours I decide enough is enough and head off to catch the last tube - home in under an hour. Result. And I certainly had a more enjoyable night at Nambucca compared to the St Moritz the previous night even though they had good bands on. |
These Blogs mainly deal with the countless gigs I go to, but there is some other stuff in there too - and the odd rant! I've just finished adding over 900 of my old posts from MySpace on here - everything is now on proper chronological order from 2005 to date - there is a LOT to read. Some of the older links may not work anymore - just click on the highlighted text for links to more info.
