I was expecting the four bands on tonight's bill to be much of a muchness. Well the first three bands were. They all played well enough and gave their fans the songs they wanted to hear - they all made an effort to put on a show, but there was a certain spark missing. That all changed when BulletBoys hit the stage. Now normally I'd say starting with a cover is pretty weak - even an AC/DC cover. But these guys open their set with one of my favourites and they reallyrip into 'Riff Raff'. The opening cover sounded so good I forgave them instantly - you'd have thought it was one of their own songs. The band really took things up a level and played with a fire and passion that made the perfectly respectable performances from the previous three bands look quite tame. I think the running order of the bands is different every night of the tour, and when BulletBoys arrived at the venue today they didn't know when they were going on - but they are playing very much like headliners tonight. Putting these boys on last was definitely the right move 'cos I'd pity any band who had to follow this! Yes, it's that man again! The UK's most in demand bass player is on tour with yet another band - this is the third band I've seen Laney74 playing with in as many months - and he hasn't even been on tour with his main band Teenage Casket Company this year. I don't know how he manages it! BulletBoys keep up an amazingly high energy level all the way through their set. This is all the more amazing as this is the first date of the tour and the band have come to the gig more or less straight from Heathrow Airport - they are playing the gig 'cold' with no rehearsal or run through of any sort - not even a soundcheck. And Laney hasn't even played with the band for 18 months! None of this shows, and the band pull if off like true pros. This really is a storming set. Like the other bands on the bill, I don't really know any of the songs - but it really doesn't matter as this band are on fire! The BulletBoys set is worth the price of admission on it's own. |
These Blogs mainly deal with the countless gigs I go to, but there is some other stuff in there too - and the odd rant! I've just finished adding over 900 of my old posts from MySpace on here - everything is now on proper chronological order from 2005 to date - there is a LOT to read. Some of the older links may not work anymore - just click on the highlighted text for links to more info.
