	I was surprised when it was announced that Stone Gods would be playing at the 800 capacity Islington Academy.  I know they had no problem selling out smaller venues like the Underworld on their first tour earlier this year, but this venue was quite a big step up. They have had a good year so far as they have inherited an 'instant' loyal fanbase from the D******s, although they have deliberately steered away from that band's overblown glam and cheesy image. Obviously far less tickets had been sold for this gig than someone was hoping, as when I arrived I found the show had been moved upstairs to the far smaller 250 capacity Bar Academy. This was a smart move as now the band would be playing in a packed club venue with a highly charged atmosphere, instead of a mostly empty large hall. The band band were as fired up as their audience - who already know most of the songs in the set well enough to sing along to. Unfortunately, drummer Ed Graham was unable to play this show as he has been having some problems with his health recently - his stand-in was certainly up to the task though. In spite of having a founder member missing for this show the band were on fine form. They also look more like a hard rock band than they did at the Underworld earlier this year - and bass player Toby has ditched his 'indie band' looking hat! Without a preening frontman prancing about this band are now noticeably heavier and harder than their previous incarnation. When they want to, they can rock very hard indeed.  Quite a wide range of styles is covered by the songs in the band's set. At times an AC/DC influence is very apparent, but there are also a couple of ballads and acoustic guitars appear. They seem a bit 'Rolling Stones' at one point. The overall feel is more aggressive and 'in your face' though, and there are some seriously heavy Wildhearts or Metallica riff-fests! The heavy stuff is what the band do best, and when they are rocking out on these songs they look like they are really enjoying themselves! In fact, I'm pretty sure I heard them throw in a sneaky Metallica cover of 'Whiplash' - but I think that would have gone over the heads of most the hardcore D*****s fans present. As far as thrash and super heavy riffing goes, I think this band could give any band a run for their money! They were pretty good at the Underworld show earlier this year, but I think Stone Gods have now got noticeably better. PS: Since this gig, Ed Graham has had to leave the band on health grounds.  A permanent replacement drummer is being sought before the band's tour supporting rising Ausie rockers Airbourne later this year. Short of supporting the mighty AC/DC (next year - who know's?) this has to be the best and most appropriate band Stone Gods could possibly support - I think this is going to be a hell of a tour!
